YOU’RE WATCHING LOCAL NEWS, DURANGO. I’M WENDY GRAHAM SETTLE. BAYFIELD CAN NOW CALL ITSELF A COLLEGE TOWN. PUEBLO COMMUNITY COLLEGE OFFICIALLY BEGAN
FALL CLASSES EARLIER THIS MONTH AT ITS NEW SATELLITE CAMPUS IN THE OLD BAYFIELD ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL ON SOUTH STREET. THE CAMPUS WILL OFFER ON-SITE CLASSES WITH
INSTRUCTORS AS WELL AS CLASSES OVER STATE-OF-THE-ART TWO-WAY VIDEO CONFERENCING TO CONNECT BAYFIELD-
AREA STUDENTS TO CLASSES OFFERED AT THE MANCOS AND DURANGO CAMPUSES. ABOUT 30 STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED IN BIOLOGY,
PSYCHOLOGY, MATH, COLLEGE PREP AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE CERTIFICATION FOR THE INAUGURAL
SEMESTER. THE COLLEGE PLANS TO OFFER MORE PROGRAMS BASED
ON THE NEEDS AND DEMANDS OF THE GREATER EASTERN LA PLATA COUNTY COMMUNITY, AND COLLEGE OFFICIALS
SAY THAT’S WHAT PUEBLO COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS ALL ABOUT. IT GOES AGAIN TO BEING PART OF THE COMMUNITY’S
COLLEGE AND PROVIDING THOSE SERVICES IN THOSE COMMUNITIES TO THOSE CITIZENS SO THEY DON’T
HAVE TO LEAVE THEIR COMMUNITY, TO GO FIND THE RESOURCES THAT THEY NEED TO PURSUE OR
REALIZE THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS OR CAREER GOALS. EACH COMMUNITY IS DIFFERENT. IT HAS ITS OWN CULTURE. AND IF WE’VE TRIED TO PROVIDE ONE MODEL IN
ONE LOCATION THAT’S NOT GOING TO NECESSARILY DELIVER TO THESE COMMUNITIES, WHAT THESE COMMUNITIES
ARE LOOKING FOR. THE BAYFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT IS PROVIDING
THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING THAT SERVES AS THE NEW PCC CAMPUS, BUT IT’S NOT THE FIRST
TIME THAT THE DISTRICT AND COLLEGE HAVE PARTNERED ON PROGRAMS. QUALIFIED BAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS HAVE
OFFERED COLLEGE-LEVEL CLASSES FOR PUEBLO COMMUNITY COLLEGE CREDIT FOR SEVERAL YEARS AS PART OF
THE STATE’S CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT PROGRAM. STUDENTS EARN HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS TOWARD THEIR
DIPLOMAS AS WELL AS COLLEGE CREDITS TOWARD THEIR DEGREES. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT PAYS THEIR TUITION UNTIL
THEY GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. SO THE IDEA IS THAT THAT 13TH AND 14TH YEAR
OF SCHOOL IS SEAMLESS, THAT THEY CAN BE TAKING A BLENDING OF, OF COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL
AND CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION. AND HERE’S THE GREAT VALUE PROPOSITION. IT’S FREE, IT’S FREE TO PARENTS WHILE THEY’RE
DOING THIS. THE ADDITION OF A SATELLITE COLLEGE CAMPUS
IN THE DISTRICT NOT ONLY GIVES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ACCESS TO MORE CLASSES, IT GIVES
ADULTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE THEIR COLLEGE EDUCATIONS CLOSE TO HOME. ON MARCH 13TH, 2019, BAYFIELD BECAME A COLLEGE
TOWN. AND PEOPLE LAUGH, AND THEY FIND THAT A LITTLE
BIT FUNNY, BUT THEN THEY REALIZE THAT THAT MEANS SOMETHING. AND WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT WE’RE NOT ONLY
PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY TO 30 OF OUR STUDENTS DURING THE DAY HERE, BUT THAT OPENS UP AN
EVENING OF LEARNING TO THAT, TO THAT SINGLE MOTHER OR SINGLE FATHER WHO WANTS TO CONTINUE
THEIR EDUCATION. THEY NO LONGER HAVE TO DRIVE TO TO A SITE
IN MANCOS. SO MAYBE MAYBE THEY DON’T SEE FORT LEWIS AS
ATTAINABLE. BUT IN PARTNERING WITH PUEBLO COMMUNITY COLLEGE,
WHAT WE SEE IS THAT THOSE GUARANTEED TRANSFER CREDITS ALLOW THEM TO HAVE THAT PATHWAY TO
SUCCESS TO COLLEGE. PUELO COMMUNITY COLLEGE WILL BEGIN ACCEPTING
ENROLLMENT FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER ON NOVEMBER 1ST. THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO LEARN MORE, SHARE
IDEAS, AND MEET PUEBLO COMMUNITY COLLEGE FACULTY, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATORS FOLLOWING A RIBBON-CUTTING
CEREMONY AND RECEPTION AT 4:30 P.M, ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, AT THE NEW PCC BAYFIELD CAMPUS
ON SOUTH STREET. VISIT PUEBLO CC.EDU/SOUTHWEST. THANKS FOR WATCHING THIS EDITION OF LOCAL
