OF THAT, WE ACHIEVED ALL BUT ONE. RIGHT THERE IS YOUR SUCCESS STORY. Octavia: THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS NEXT WEEK AND THAT MEANS NEW SCHOOLS AND BUILDINGS. Brad: TEMPLE RICKE IS LIVE IN STUDIO. THIS YEAR BERKELEY COUNTY DID SOMETHING FOR THE OLD BERKELEY HIGH AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Temple: A VERY EXCITING DAY IN BERKELEY COUNTY. TODAY FORMER TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY HAVE THE CHANCE TO TOUR A RENOVATED CENTER THAT SAT EMPTY FOR YEARS. IN 1912 A SMALL SCHOOL OPENED WITH 11 STUDENTS. BY 1915, THAT BUILDING WAS TOO NAUL SMALL AND A BRICK BUILDING WITH TWO CLASSROOMS AND AUDITORIUM WAS BUILT. A FEW YEARS LATER THE SCHOOL HAD 1300 STUDENTS AND IN 1930, THE HISTORIC BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL SAW ITS FIRST GRADUATING CLASS. I’M TOLD THE NEW EDUCATION CENTER WAS PAID FOR BY THE 2012 BOND REFERENDUM BECAUSE THE COMMUNITY WANTED TO SEE THAT BUILDING RESTORED. WE HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED SO MANY PHONE CALLS FROM TEACHERS WHO TAUGHT HERE, STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED HERE. I’M TALKING ABOUT LATE INTO THE 1930s AND ’40s, HEARING STORIES FROM THEIR GRANDPARENTS ABOUT WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE. THIS IS SO EXCITING FOR THEM TO GET TO COME INSIDE AND SEE HISTORY IN PERSON.
